Yacht: Bestevaer 36 ‘Alũmina’

The yacht may be compact in size, but it is impressive in performance.

A lifelong passion for sailing
“We’ve been sailing for many years. Since 1995 we owned a Sprit 32, followed by a Hanse 345 for the past ten years. Our voyages took us to England, Normandy and Brittany, and later to the Baltic Sea.”

We were looking for a comfortable cruising yacht—not too large, with a shallow draft. We’re getting older, but this is exactly the time to enjoy it. The Bestevaer 36 offers us everything we want: the ability to dry out, to sail in shallow waters. The yacht may be compact in size, but it is impressive in performance.

Why the Bestevaer 36?
“We chose the Bestevaer 36 for its lifting keel, the beautiful pilothouse and the overall appearance of the yacht.”

“Back in 2004, without even knowing what kind of boat it was, I photographed the brand-new Bestevaer 2 by Gerard Dijkstra on the IJsselmeer. I found it such a beautiful, robust presence. That must have been the moment the seed was planted! I had completely forgotten about it, until I recently came across that photo again by chance. Now, we have our own Bestevaer 36: ‘Alũmina’.”

The meaning behind the name
“We wanted a name that was truly unique. While brainstorming, we came up with Alũmina—a reference to light and aluminium.”

Sailing Plans

“This year we’ll stay on the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. Next year, perhaps the Baltic Sea or Norway. Later on, maybe further afield: a round trip around England, and perhaps even the Lofoten Islands.
